Place construction paper on flat surface. Use ruler to cut paper into strips of even widths. For tighter chains, cut paper into sixteen 9" x 3/4" strips. For looser chains, cut paper into nine 12" x 1" strips. Fold the first strip into a circle and glue, tape, or staple closed. Loop the second strip through the first strip, secure, and continue with third strip. | top of page | Paper Tube SparklersMaterials Needed
Cover work area with newspaper. Give each child a craft smock, a paintbrush, and an empty toilet paper roll. Have children paint toilet paper rolls red or blue and set them aside to dry. While rolls are drying, give each child a large handful of metallic paper shreds. Instruct children to count out 20 strips, tape around the base of them, and set them aside. Cover work area with newspaper. Divide children into groups of four or five, and supply each group with star patterns, paint, and a styrofoam tray of salft. Give each child a craft smock, a piece of cardstock, a pencil, and scissors. Show children how to trace star onto cardstock and cut it out. Allow time for all children to trace and cut their stars. Next, collect pencils and scissors and give each child a paintbrush. Instruct children to paint their star red or blue, then dip it into the tray of salt while the paint is still wet. As the paint/salt combination dries, the salt will give the star a shimmering, sparkling appearance. Finished stars may be hole-punched and hung from the ceiling, added into patriotic paper chains, or displayed on a bulletin board as desired. | top of page | Links to Other Resources:Arts and Crafts for Veterans Day -- A collection of related art and craft activities.
